10 Effects of Arthritis That Scares Everyone

The term "arthritis" literally means joint inflammation; it is used to describe the numerous rheumatic diseases and health conditions that affect joints. It is a common health condition known to affect mostly women, which causes chronic pain, etc. Arthritis is also known to affect both men and children.

Here are some effects of Arthritis everybody needs to know.

1. Physical Limitation

Arthritis causes impairment in the ability of people to perform their essential daily tasks. This usually interferes with their work, their sense of purpose in their community, or the care they can provide for their family.

2. Disability

It has been found that around 18% of total disabilities are caused by arthritis or rheumatism. According to reports, Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the US. When you are disabled, you lose your independence and ability to do things yourself.

3. Emotional health

The CDC revealed that arthritis has 18.1% risk associated with depression. This is thought to be most likely caused by the limitation of activities (function and enjoyment of life) caused by arthritis.
Around 6.6% of adults with arthritis report severe psychological distress.

4. Increase BMI

Also, the CDC found that the prevalence of arthritis increases with body mass index (BMI): almost 16% of adults who are under/normal weight have arthritis; almost 23% of overweight adults have arthritis, and almost 31% of obese adults have arthritis.
Researchers found that having a higher BMI is associated with an increase in activity limitations related to arthritis.

5. Living with chronic pain

People with arthritis find living with chronic pain overwhelming. It is expected that newly-diagnosed arthritis patients would be afraid of how intrusive pain will be while the condition remain. Although the degree of intrusion depends on the severity of the disease, it also depends on how well the person responds to treatment. But, you should know that living with chronic pain is not a hopeless situation.

6. Risk of diseases associate with lack of exercise

It has been found that individuals with arthritis face a high risk of health conditions associated with lack of exercise such as; cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and functional limitations. A study found that around 24% of adults with arthritis are physically inactive in exercise compared with 18.6% of adults without arthritis.

7. Worsening Symptoms and Ineffective Treatment

While there is no specific cure for a particular type of arthritis, some people fear the worsening of the symptoms of arthritis when treatment goes wrong. Others fear the treatment may not be able to control the chronic pains. Again, people are always afraid of wasting their valuable time and money on ineffective treatments.

8. Passing Arthritis on to Your Children

Most parents with arthritis fear the risk of passing the disease on to their children. MNT reveals that specific genes are associated with a higher risk of certain types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and ankylosing spondylitis.

9. Effect on your Relationships

There isn’t much fun for people living with arthritis – chronic pains and physical limitations. This health condition does not only affect you, it also affects people who are close to you. It affects your ability to socialize with friends and family. Your spouse would have to take on more responsibilities. When your friends call and want to go out, you repeatedly decline. Chronic pain can rock your relationship and everyone in the boat.

10. Dying from Arthritis due to Comorbidities

According to MNT, the CDC reports that 47% of US adults with arthritis also have at least one comorbid condition (the presence of more than one disease or health condition in the same person at the same time).

Among people with arthritis the most common comorbidities are: heart disease, chronic respiratory conditions, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Rheumatoid arthritis, one of the most popular types of arthritis is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis may also have a greater risk of mortality due to malignancies, infections, kidney disease, respiratory conditions, and gastrointestinal disease – some of which may be treatment-related.
