3 Basic Factors That Causes Major Depression

While we all feel sad, moody or disappointed from time to time, there are people who experience these feelings intensely, for a long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without a clear sense of why they are depressed.

Depression is more than just a low mood – it is a serious health condition that affects your physical and mental well-being.

Causes of Depression

Depression is an extremely complex disease that occurs for a variety of reasons, apart from sadness or loss of a loved one. It may be caused one or a combination of the following factors.

A. Biological Factors

i. Brain:

A research suggests that depression can be caused by an imbalance of naturally occurring substances called neurotransmitters in the brain and spinal cord.

Serotonin and norepinephrine are two neurotransmitters in the brain that appear to be involved in the symptoms of depression.

ii. Genetics:

Researchers know that if depression runs in your family, you have a higher chance of becoming depressed.

iii. Age:

People who are elderly are said to have a higher risk of depression. This is usually compounded by other factors, such as loneliness and lack of social support.

iv. Gender:

Women are about twice as likely as men to become depressed. No one is sure why. However, study suggests that the hormonal changes that women go through at different times of their lives may play a role.

B. Psychological Factors

i. Thoughts:

Individuals are affected differently by outside events. Each person’s thought determine how he or she will experience life, which can affect whether or not they become depressed.
The way we think about things and view the world, especially during childhood triggers a high risk of depression as we grow. For example, a strict and severe upbringing which that predominated with negative comments and criticism can shape the way we think and view the world, in most likely a negative way.

ii. Abuse – physical or emotional.

It is not surprising, therefore, that these feelings and thoughts predispose people to emotional suffering.

C. Environmental Factors

Depressed condition is often be triggered by a very stressful life situation or other factors such as:
  • The death of a loved one
  • Divorce and Other family crisis
  • Financial difficulties or job loss
  • Social isolation
  • Periods of relationship conflict, whether marital or family-related.
  • Highly demanding work or a stressful workplace
  • Health issues, especially when the person has a chronic health problem.

Surprising Fact!

Sometimes the biggest hurdle to becoming a better person and moving forward is depression. Depressed persons often removes themselves from the presence of comforting and encouraging loved ones and ceases to participate in activities which may contribute to their well-being. By so doing, they worsen the effects of their condition.

You must stay free from depression and built a better you!
